My Inspiration

I found Martha Graham's Night Journey and Lamentation to be very entertaining. At first I noticed the musicality in the dance. I thought the jumps in the beginning of the dance were satisfying to watch. I enjoy watching movement that is unique but still fits in the pocket of music. I also noticed the use of arms in the dance. It is common for Graham dancers to think of their arms coming from their back instead of just the shoulder. This mentality is very prominent in this piece particularly. I chose Cat Cogliandro's piece They Don't Love You, Hide Don't Seek, and I'll Eat You Whole performed by Catastrophe because the way Cat choreographs has a sense of directness while still being completely immersed in her work. I specifically felt drawn to this piece because when I choreograph a piece, I like to use isolated movements that are small. In this dance you can see the shaking of the hands and pointing that she uses. Cat also has a way of not dancing to the beat or the words, but making her own beat with movement. That skill is something that I love to incorporate into my movement when working with dancers who understand the power of silence. Cat also has a way of reminding me of why I started dancing, because of the carefree lose feeling she brings to her dances. I chose the other videos because of the way I view music. When listening to music, I see colors and psychedelic images.
